Setting Up the Game

To play Hookey Ring Toss, you first need find the right space needed. You will need 6 to 9 feet of room away from the wall that the board will hang on.

Hang the game on a wall, preferably somewhere on your patio where you can leave it up year-round.

Objective of the Game

The objective is to see how many of the rings you can throw and land on the hooks. There are 13 different numbered hooks, each with different values.

Each person takes turns throwing their 6 rings and then tallying up their score.

Winning the Game

There are different variations of the rules, but typically, the first person to reach 101 points wins.

It’s time to gather all the neighborhood kids and the family because this is one of those games that will challenge you to master.

Rules for Hookey Ring Toss

Once you’ve mounted your set on the wall, you’ll find the rules are straightforward and easy to grasp.

Here are the official Hookey rules, with alternative rules to follow.

  1. Determine the Throwing Order: Each player takes turns throwing their 6 rings, and the player with the highest point total starts first. Others follow in that order. If you are playing with 4 people, each team gets 3 rings each.
  2. Create the Throwing Line: This is a line that you cannot cross when throwing. A distance of 6 or 9 feet away from the game is suggested, depending on the skill level of the players.
  3. Throw the Rings: Each player throws all their 6 rings one after another. After this, the rings that land on the hook are counted as their score.
  4. Bonus Throw: If all 6 of the rings one player throws land on the hooks, they get another bonus throw.
  5. Reaching 101 Points: The first player to reach 101 points without going over wins. If you do not get the exact number and go over, then your throw does not count, and you will need to wait again until your turn to throw.

Alternative Rules for Hookey

One of the appealing aspects of Hookey is the flexibility it offers in gameplay.

While the standard game aims to reach an exact score of 101, this might be too quick or too lengthy for some players.

My personal favorite variation is akin to ’round the world’ in darts. With 12 different hooks in Hookey, the goal in this version is to land on all hooks from numbers 1-12 in order.

Feel free to create your fun variations, such as seeing who can reach 50 first using the fewest rings.

Why Hookey is a Must-Have

Hookey is a backyard game that deserves a spot in your collection. While it’s not a physically demanding game, it’s a fun activity for groups and individuals of all abilities.

It’s versatile enough to be played in your backyard, during camping trips, or even in your office.

Aside from the rings that attach to the board, the game is sturdy and well-designed.

We used some glue to attach this, but according to reviews, the Hookey team has addressed this issue.

Hookey isn’t just a game for kids. We played it at an adult birthday party, and it was a hit.
