Capture the Flag rules and variations

How to Play Capture the Flag:

1. Set Up The Field: Start by designating the boundaries of your backyard. Use natural landmarks like trees or bushes, or set up temporary markers with cones, flags, shoes or whatever you have. If you want to get official you can purchase a Capture the Flag Set. Make sure the area is large enough to accommodate both teams and provides plenty of hiding spots and obstacles. If you don’t have a backyard to use, a local park or the woods will work!

2. Divide into Teams: Divide players into two equal teams and assign each team a base on opposite ends of the playing area. Each base should have a designated “jail” area where captured players will be held after they are tagged.

3. Hide Your Flag: Each team should hide their flag somewhere within their base. The flag should be visible but not too easy to reach, requiring some effort to grab.

4. Start the Game: Once both flags are hidden, designate a neutral starting point for all players. On your signal, both teams will rush to retrieve the opposing team’s flag while defending their own.

5. Capture the Flag: To capture the flag, a player must sneak into the opposing team’s base, retrieve their flag, and safely return it to their own base without getting tagged by an opponent. If you need a head start on strategies you can find them here at Starlux Games.

6. Tagging and Jail: If a player is tagged by an opponent while in enemy territory, they are sent to the opposing team’s jail. Players can be rescued from jail if a teammate successfully retrieves their flag without getting tagged themselves.

7. Winning the Game: The game continues until one team successfully captures the opposing team’s flag and brings it back to their own base without getting tagged. That team is declared the winner!
